Frequently Asked Questions

>What medium/materials do you use?

I make art using the cyanotype process, which is an old (circa the 1800s) form of photography. It uses iron salts (ferric ammonium citrate + potassium ferricyanide) and sunlight to imprint images onto paper. Because the iron salts must be washed off, I create my designs on watercolor paper (Canson Montval)—but my cyanotypes are not watercolor paintings. Visit the About page to learn more!

>Do you use sunlight or a UV lamp to expose your prints?

All of my cyanotypes are “baked” in natural sunlight! While planning my creativity around the weather forecast can get prickly, I prefer it, as I find that working outdoors fuels my creativity and is therapeutic.

>What color blue are cyanotypes meant to be?

Traditional cyanotypes are a deep shade of blue known as “Prussian blue.”

That said, artists can control how pale or deep of a blue their cyanotype is by adjusting factors such as the mix of their iron salts, the type of paper used, how the paper is coated, and exposure time. (This is why you often see cyanotypes in a range of blue shades—it’s artistic license!) My cyanotypes tend to be an intense blue / blue-black.

>Are your cyanotypes made from objects or photographs?

The majority of my cyanotypes are what are known as photograms—made by exposing actual botanicals to sunlight. However, I do occasionally make cyanotypes using my own nature photography.

>Are your cyanotypes giclée prints?

No, each of my cyanotypes is individually created by hand and is not a giclée print or a reproduction. Because of this, no two are exactly alike! Natural variations in the placement of botanicals should be expected between prints of the same design.

>Do you create commission work?

At this time, I am not accepting commissions. However, if you have a design idea you’d really like to pitch me, please reach out and we can discuss further.

>Your art is lovely! May I use your images?

Thank you for the compliment! While I want you to enjoy the artwork here, please do not use any images on this site for personal or commercial purposes without first obtaining written permission from me.

>Are you environmentally friendly?

Yes! One way I practice eco-friendliness is by sustainably harvesting most of the botanicals in my designs. I also incorporate 100% recycled materials into my packaging. And as for the few packaging materials that aren't sustainably made (the protective plastic sleeves, for example), I make sure they can at least be curbside recycled by you.
